Project Overview

The City Parks Department needed to address growing concerns about after-hours vandalism, unauthorised vehicle access, and public safety incidents in a 50-acre municipal park. The park featured playgrounds, walking trails, sports fields, and a lake, frequented by thousands of visitors weekly.

Our design prioritised public safety while respecting privacy, with cameras positioned only at entry points, parking areas, and known problem spots. Clear signage was installed at all park entrances notifying visitors of surveillance.

Key Challenges

The park had no power or network infrastructure in most areas. All cameras had to be solar-powered with cellular backup for data transmission. The equipment had to be vandal-resistant with IK10 rating to withstand potential tampering.

Public consultation revealed strong opinions about surveillance in public spaces. The city council required a privacy impact assessment and multiple community meetings before approving the installation. Camera angles were carefully adjusted to avoid overlooking private residences bordering the park.

Products Used

Twelve solar-powered wireless cameras were installed at key locations, featuring built-in AI analytics for person detection. Four PTZ cameras provided active monitoring of the parking areas and sports fields. Each camera location included a two-way emergency call point directly connected to the city's security operations centre.

The system operated on a private LTE network with a central management platform at the city's security operations centre. Video was retained for 14 days unless flagged as evidence of an incident.

Final Outcome

After-hours vandalism dropped by 75% within two months. The emergency call points have been used by visitors seeking assistance on five occasions. The park remains open and welcoming, with the surveillance system operating unobtrusively in the background.

The city has expanded the system to two additional parks based on the successful pilot. Public feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 89% of surveyed visitors supporting the enhanced safety measures.
