Project Overview

A major logistics provider operating a 25,000sqm distribution warehouse was experiencing inventory discrepancies and unauthorised vehicle access. Their existing system of 16 analogue cameras provided inadequate coverage of the sprawling facility.

Our brief was to provide complete coverage of all aisles, loading docks, and the truck yard, with automatic number plate recognition for all entering and exiting vehicles.

Key Challenges

The warehouse had 15m-high ceilings with narrow aisles, requiring cameras with long focal lengths and wide dynamic range to handle the contrast between bright skylights and dark aisle floors. Forklift traffic meant cameras had to be mounted high enough to avoid collisions.

The inventory tracking integration required precise synchronisation between camera views and the WMS (Warehouse Management System) to correlate footage with specific pallet movements.

Products Used

Forty-eight Uniview 4MP bullet cameras were installed along the warehouse aisles at 12m height, providing overlapping coverage with no blind spots. Eight additional cameras covered the loading dock area, and four ANPR cameras were installed at the truck entry and exit points.

A 64-channel NVR with 48TB storage provided 60 days of continuous recording at full resolution. The system was integrated with the existing WMS to tag footage with inventory transaction IDs for easy forensic searching.

Final Outcome

Inventory accuracy improved from 92% to 99.5% within three months. The automated LPR system reduced truck turnaround time by 25% by eliminating manual check-in procedures. Three incidents of unauthorised vehicle access were detected and prevented.

The warehouse manager reported that the system paid for itself through reduced shrinkage alone within 10 months. The ability to quickly search footage by transaction ID has been invaluable for resolving customer disputes about damaged or missing items.

Products Used

The following products were selected and installed for this project based on their reliability, performance, and suitability for the specific requirements of the site.
