Warehouse Security Transformation: From Analogue to 4K IP

The Legacy System

The 15,000sqm warehouse operated with a 20-year-old analogue CCTV system consisting of 24 cameras recording at D1 resolution (720x480) to a bank of DVRs. Image quality was poor, with dark and grainy footage that was useless for identifying individuals. Only two weeks of recording were retained, and searching through footage was a manual, time-consuming process.

The system had no remote viewing capability, meaning management had to be on-site to review any footage. Camera positions were fixed and poorly planned, with large blind spots covering critical areas including loading docks and inventory storage zones.

The IP Upgrade

The warehouse deployed 48 IP cameras: 20x 4K bullet cameras covering the perimeter and loading docks, 20x 4MP turret cameras covering aisles and storage racks, 4x PTZ cameras for active monitoring of high-value inventory, and 4x 8MP cameras covering the dispatch area for licence plate recognition. A 64-channel NVR with 48TB storage provided 45 days of continuous recording at 4K resolution.

The system was deployed on a dedicated VLAN with a 10Gb fibre backbone connecting PoE switches distributed throughout the facility. Remote viewing was set up for the security team and warehouse manager via mobile app, enabling after-hours monitoring from anywhere.

Measurable Outcomes

Inventory loss from theft dropped by 75% within the first quarter. The high-resolution footage allowed for positive identification of individuals, leading to three successful prosecutions. Insurance costs decreased by 12% following the security upgrade.

Beyond security, the system provided unexpected operational benefits. Management used footage review to optimise warehouse workflows, identifying bottlenecks in picking and packing processes. Loading dock footage helped resolve three disputes with delivery contractors about damaged goods.
