Planning Your Layout

Before running any cables, create a detailed plan of your camera locations. Measure the distance from each camera to your NVR or PoE switch. Standard PoE has a maximum cable run of 100 metres (328 feet). For longer distances, use a PoE extender or consider placing your switch closer.

Mark each camera location and test the field of view before permanently mounting cameras. Walk around the area to identify potential obstructions like tree branches that may grow into the camera's view over time.

Running Ethernet Cables

Use solid copper Cat6 or Cat6a cable for optimal PoE performance, avoiding CCA (copper-clad aluminium) cables which have higher resistance and can cause voltage drop. Run cables through conduit for outdoor installations or through attics and crawl spaces for indoor runs.

Leave at least 30cm of service loop at both ends of each cable run. This allows for connector replacement if a cable end is damaged. Avoid running cables parallel to electrical wiring to prevent interference.

Mounting Cameras

Mount cameras at least 3 metres high to prevent tampering. Use the provided mounting template to mark screw positions. For wall-mounted cameras, ensure the mounting surface is flat and solid. Use appropriate anchors for brick, concrete, or wood surfaces.

Adjust the camera angle after mounting and tighten all locking rings. Connect the Ethernet cable and seal the connection with weatherproof tape or the provided gasket. For bullet cameras, ensure the cable enters from below to prevent water ingress.

Configuring Your NVR

Connect your NVR to a monitor via HDMI and power it on. Most modern NVRs auto-detect PoE cameras on initial setup. Follow the on-screen wizard to set up your admin password, create a recording schedule (continuous or motion-triggered), and configure remote access.

Enable motion detection on all cameras and configure notification settings. Set up a recording schedule that matches your needs. For businesses, continuous recording is recommended. For home use, motion-triggered recording saves storage space.

Setting Up Remote Viewing

Download the manufacturer's mobile app and create an account. Most NVRs support cloud connectivity via a QR code scan on the app. Ensure your NVR is connected to your router via Ethernet for stable remote access.

Test remote viewing from outside your home network to confirm port forwarding or P2P connectivity is working. Set up user accounts for family members or employees with appropriate access levels.
